Daughter to Caribbean parents, as a child they brought her to St. Martin, her mother’s home island, where she was reared in Cole Bay. A leading St. Martin poet and visual artist, she is author of two poetry collections The Rainy Season (1997) and skin (2006). She has also been included in the anthology Where I See The Sun. Contemporary Poetry in St. Martin (2013), edited by Lasana M. Sekou and published under the House of Nehesi label. Drisana’s writing navigates various topics, but identity and history are two of the constants in her work as well as the presence of water: lagoons, tears, salt ponds, hurricanes, oceans. Love and desire are also present, sometimes towards the men who dance with her on “saturday night”, as a form of liberation and rebellion; others in hymns where she treasures the past of her homeland as in "the shores sing our songs", or in postcards that shine with nostalgia. In general, her poems in free verse breathe Caribbean landscapes, palm trees, mangroves, bays and harvests of salt, but there is also an important space for motherhood, not only in human terms but above all, terrestrial, “in roots deep & true”.
The following poems have been taken from Where I See The Sun. Contemporary Poetry in St. Martin (2013) and skin (2006).
THE EDGES SING OUR SONGS
we know the edges of this land
woven to the water
by sand, rock & mangrove roots
shoring together
the ebb and flow of tides
keeping time with our breath
the footprints of Caribs
etch the sides of hills
marking their place
their present
our history
looked at you
saw women and salt
named you after both
one to soothe, one to suck
one to heal, one to season
looked up from lagoons
& great ponds and saw seeking ships
seeking the East in westward passages
finding our center
only the land knows
what was lost
the blood, the bones,
the entrails, the umbilical
the names
etched in roots
deep & true
the harvest will not be simple
recibiendo juntamente
el ir y venir de las mareas
preservando el tiempo con nuestra respiración
las huellas de los caribes
grabadas en las colinas
marcan sus lugares
su presente
nuestra historia
te miraron
vieron mujeres y sal
te nombraron con ambas
una para aliviar, otra para chupar
una para curar, otra para sazonar
miraron desde lagunas
& grandes estanques y vieron barcos exploradores
buscando el Este en derroteros al poniente
encontrando nuestro centro
sólo la tierra sabe
lo que se ha perdido
la sangre, los huesos,
las entrañas, lo umbilical
los nombres
grabados en raíces
profundas & verdaderas
la cosecha no será simple
THE NEST AND OTHER HOMES FOR THE HEART
someday love will find you
build a nest in your heart
with twigs of longing and bits of fabric
from clothes long worn
that is the day that I
will leave this place
this planet in an endless orbit
I will go to the moon
settle in her craters
and watch with longing
with her
comets hurtling free
and planets aligning
together the moon and I
will wonder at our lot
at our cruel circumstance
our endless orbit around unforgiving stars
elliptical and strange
I want a straight line
to you, dark star
I want this orbit to end
What will be the damage?
I pull no tides
the sea will not miss me
only the lunatics will
mourn my absence
I know this because I’ve howled with them
on solitary nights when words are lost
grammar empty
nests abandoned
junto a ella
cometas lanzados libremente
y planteas alineándose
juntas la luna y yo
preguntaremos por nuestra suerte
nuestra cruel circunstancia
SATURDAY NIGHT
he looked like you
in the dark
so i danced
with him
the scent of the sea and onions
cornered where his neck
and shoulder merged
into a resting place
for my torn cheek
he wuking up wetness
with gentle gyrations
my pores yawning to embrace his musk
the place between my thighs
weeps with longing
the newness of him teases
and you sleep
confident that i
actually stay
in my place
where you put me
SÁBADO POR LA NOCHE
se parecían
en la oscuridad
así que bailé
junto a él
ON BEING HOME/SICK
fireflies in the yard next door
are all the illuminate
this night
no moon
no stars
no elusive headlights
venture this rocky road
now
just the fire of flies
and me
beckoning the darkness
in hushed tones
to come closer
NOSTALGIA DEL HOGAR
luciérnagas en el jardín de al lado
es todo lo que ilumina
esta noche
ni luna
ni estrellas
ni elusivos faros
se aventuran en este camino rocoso
ahora
sólo el fuego de las moscas
y yo
hacemos señales a la oscuridad
en tonos callados
para que se acerque
