Cuando caía el verano en los portones
y el sol alternaba en el muro
el destello de un ala
con el brillo de la cal
y se asentaba en la boca el sabor del vino
cuando el verano detenía el aire
en las ramas de la higuera
y daba alas al estremecimiento
de las frondas y un repiqueteo
en la espalda hacía eco
del grito agudo de las golondrinas
cuando se alzaban voces varoniles
adhiriéndose a los muros
mientras la flauta imitaba
las peripecias de la hiedra en el balcón
y se tendía al horizonte
el incesante indecible
fulgor
ah esos brillos abiertos
llenaban mirada y corazón
cuando el verano tocaba
en los confines de la calle Fanouríou
altos en los dinteles,
esos portaestandartes y su estela de óxido
cuando secaba el musgo en la piedra caliza
y daba apenas un respiro
al aire cayendo como cortina densa
ah esos murmullos
lentas reiteraciones del corazón
no presintieron
en el instante vuelto ya
sólo fulgor
la muerte que llegaba.

When summer fell on the gates
and sunlight on the wall flickered
between the spark of a wing
and the brilliance of whitewash,
and the taste of wine settled in the mouth
when summer stilled the air
in the branches of the fig tree
and gave wings to the trembling
of the fronds, and a ringing
in the spine echoed
the high-pitched cry of the swallows
when virile voices rose
clinging to the walls
while the flute imitated
the wandering ivy on the balcony,
and the incessant, indescribable
glow
stretched to the horizon
ah, that wide open brilliance
filled the gaze and the heart
when the summer touched
on the edges of Fanouríou Street
high on the lintels,
those standard bearers and their trail of rust
when the summer dried the moss
on the limestone and barely gave relief
to the air falling like a thick curtain
ah those murmurings
slow reverberations of the heart
didn’t foresee
in the moment turned
into pure radiance
the death approaching.

Elsa Cross nació en México en 1946. Ha publicado numerosos poemarios en México y otros países. A su Poesía completa (1964-2012) se han sumado varios títulos más. En la última década recibió el Premio Roger Caillois (París, 2010), la Medalla Bellas Artes (México, 2012), el Premio Poestate (Lugano, Suiza, 2015) y el Premio Nacional de Artes y Literatura (México, 2016), máxima distinción literaria otorgada en México. Es maestra y doctora en Filosofía por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, donde es profesora titular de Filosofía de la Religión. Ha publicado también libros de ensayo y traducción de poesía del inglés y el francés.
Elsa Cross was born in México in 1946. She has published several books of poetry in Mexico and other countries, including Poesía completa (1964-2012) [Complete Poetry (1964-2012)]. In the last decade, she has received the Roger Caillois Prize (París, 2010), the Fine Arts Medal (Mexico, 2012), the Poestate Prize (Lugano, Switzerland, 2015) and the National Prize for Arts and Literature (Mexico, 2016), which is the highest literary distinction granted in Mexico. She holds an MA and PhD in Philosophy from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she is Professor of the Philosophy of Religion. She has also published books of essays and translations of poetry from both English and French.
Susan Ayres es poeta, abogada y traductora. Es maestra en escritura creativa con especialización en traducción por la Universidad de Bellas Artes de Vermont, y doctora en literatura por la `Texas Christian University. Ha publicado su obra en las revistas Sycamore Review, Cimarron Review y Valparaiso Review, entre otras. Actualmente vive en Fort Worth y enseña en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Texas A&M.
Susan Ayres is a poet, lawyer, and translator. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing with a Concentration in Translation from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and a PhD in Literature from Texas Christian University. Her work has appeared in Sycamore Review, Cimarron Review, Valparaiso Review, and elsewhere. She lives in Fort Worth and teaches at Texas A&M University School of Law.
