FIESTA
I gather these moments,
string them together
like the papel picado in our living room,
festive, yet peckered nonetheless.
In America I am celebrated
for my ability to give birth,
but to keep my full-time job
I must be cut and shaped with precision,
hung in an office which holds cheap conversations.
The onlooker convinced
I am a beautiful piece of décor
to adorn the walls
on Cinco de Mayo.

Recolecto estos momentos
los voy hilando
como el papel picado de nuestra sala,
festivo, y sin embargo picoteado.
En los Estados Unidos de América me celebran
por mi habilidad de dar a luz,
pero para mantener mi trabajo de tiempo completo
debo estar cortada a la medida y moldeada con precisión,
colgada en una oficina que auspicia conversaciones baratas.
Los espectadores se convencen
que soy una bella pieza de decoración
para adornar las paredes

At the joint,
where Ma came home
with another man,
desperate for shade
of a family tree.
Under the marrow,
where my thighs
welcomed
a man
I did not want.
Between the cavity,
where the matriarch
pinched the Eagle’s beak,
abuela said, “Te lo dije.

In the cartilage,
where I am mother
and stranger
both
the same.

Carolina Hinojosa-Cisneros is a former columnist at Sojourners and has contributed to Duke’s Faith & Leadership and The OnBeing Project. Her work has appeared in The Rumpus, The Acentos Review, Concho River Review, Christianity Today, among others. Her work appears alongside scholar poets in Latina Outsiders: Remaking Latina Identity, edited by Grisel Y. Acosta. Carolina is the 2019 Recipient for the Rubem Alves Award in Theopoetics, a high honor granted by Arts, Religion, Culture (ARC). She now serves on the Board of Directors for Arts, Religion, Culture (ARC), and is the poetry co-editor of The Journal of Latina Critical Feminism. She is an Albert J. Griffith Ph.D. Endowed Fellow at Our Lady of the Lake University where she is in her final semester as an English graduate student in the MA program with emphases in literature, creative writing, and social justice.
